Daniel L. Hays was born in the rural north central Missouri town of Marceline. He has always been active in his community. Daniel's commitment to public service began at an early age. This commitment was fostered by his father's selfless dedication and example of community service.

Daniel's current IAWP leadership activities include: serving as International Immediate Past President, President of the IAPES Foundation, Chairman of the International Legislative Steering Committee, and Secretary-Treasurer of the District of Columbia Chapter. Daniel's prior service at the International level includes: District X Director, Chair of the Legislative Steering Committee, Chair of the Marketing and Communications Committee, Chair of the Website Redesign Committee. Daniel currently is a member of the District of Columbia, South Carolina and Virginia chapters.

As a child Daniel was actively involved in the local 4-H organization. Being involved in 4-H taught him the value of education, dedication and public service. In fact it is 4-H that first exposed Daniel to one of his first loves - politics. His political work continued after high school while attending Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. While at Westminster Daniel helped to rebuild the campus College Democrats chapter, serving as Chapter President and State Treasurer. In addition while attending high school and college Daniel interned for several members of the Missouri General Assembly including Gracia Yancey Backer D-20 and Rodger Fitzwater D-36.

Upon graduation with a degree in Political Science and a minor in History - Daniel continued his commitment to public service as Chief of Staff to State Representative Glenda Kelly. Then in 1998, Daniel accepted a position in the Office of Secretary of State Rebecca McDowell Cook, as an Election Specialist. Daniel continued to work in the Elections Division in 2001 until accepting a position with the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations working in the Legislative Affairs unit. This position evolved to focus strictly on the Division of Employment Security where his primary duties included functioning as the division's legislative, budget and trust fund analyst. In August of 2006 Daniel moved to Arlington, Virginia to accept his current position with the United States Department of Labor. Daniel's duties include monitoring federal legislative and tracking legislative enactments in various states.

In addition to Daniel's involvement in IAWP, he is an active member of the American Federation of Government Employees - Local 12 serving as a union steward, and as a member of the Labor Management Relations Committee for ETA. Daniel also serves his local community through his service as the President of the Arlington Gay & Lesbian Alliance.

Daniel currently resides with his partner Patrick, and two cats (Cleo and Xena) in Alexandria, Virginia.
